Participants of Macao Junior Police Call Experience the Work of Prison Guards (2018-09-15)
On 15 September, 14 participants of the Macao Junior Police Call of the General Association of Chinese Students of Macao visited Coloane Prison, joining our youth-oriented interactive experience activity and touring facilities including the visit rooms, the cell area and vocational training workshops, learning of the Prison’s functions of enforcing penalties of liberty deprivation and custodial measures.
Subsequently, the prison guards demonstrated the use of a series of work equipment. The participants showed curiosity as they tried to use the metal detector and handcuff one by one; moreover, they were given the opportunity to board a prisoner escort vehicle, furthering their understanding of prison guards work in that respect.
The highlight of the activity was when the participants role-played as prison guards in a mock cell where they used prison guard equipment to carefully uncover the prohibited items concealed beforehand, while adhering to the prison guards’ protocol of conducting searches and maintaining discipline in the cell at the same time. This enabled the participants to experience the work of prison guards and the challenges they face.
The Bureau organized this interactive experience activity in hopes that it would allow the participants an understanding of the prison guards’ responsibility and calling to maintain prison order and safeguard public security. In a sharing session that followed, the participants mentioned that, after getting an authentic experience, they came to a realization about the level of professionalism, dedication and conscientiousness involved in prison guards’ work, as well as the challenges of working in a prison.
