Tong Nam School Students Visit Coloane Prison to Experience Tasks of Prison Guards (2019-04-03)

On 6 April, 20 visitorsfrom Tong Nam School (teachers and students) visited the Correctional ServicesBureau, touring the facilities of Coloane Prison and learning about the dailyequipment of the prison guards. Moreover, they were arranged to role-play asprison guards on various posts, furthering their understanding of corrections andthe work of prison guards, thus raising their law-abidingness and nurturingtheir correct values.

During the activity, the prisonguards introduced to the students the professional equipment for supervision,escort and searching, and allowed them to try the equipment and familiarizethemselves of its operation and functions. Subsequently, the students went on atour of the facilities including the visit room, the general checkpoint and thecell area to learn about the Prison’s enforcement of liberty-depriving penaltyand custodial measures.

The visiting students went on to have afirsthand experience of the work of the prison guards by participating in asimulated search and patrol operation in a mock cell: they carefully searchedthe corners in the cell and patrolled the corridor using prison guards’ professionalequipment. In the sharing session that followed, multiple students mentionedhow the activity benefitted them as they gained a deeper understanding of theresponsibilities and missions of the prison guards.
