Aliança de Povo de Instituição de Macau Visits Correctional Services Bureau (2020-01-17)
With the Chinese New Yearapproaching, a 12-member delegation, composed of members of the Aliança de Povode Instituição de Macau (including its Founding President, Mr. Chan Meng Kam;Honorary President, Mr. Si Ka Lon; President, Mr. Chan Chon Pat; President ofthe board of directors, Mr. Lei Leong Wong; anda number of the Vice-presidents of the board of directors such as Ms. Song PekKei) and the President of the Macau Fair and Trade Association, Mr. Lam ChongIn, visited the Correctional Services Bureau on 17 January, for an exchangewith our Director Cheng Fong Meng, Deputy Director Loi Kam Wan and ourmanagement on corrections-related matters, as well as a visit to the inmates tosend them Chinese New Year greetings.
Director Cheng Fong Meng thanked the Aliançade Povo de Instituição de Macau for its long-standing support for correctionalservices, as exemplified by its yearly visits to the inmates in the Prison thatsend a message of care and encouragement. Inmates’ successful return to societyrequires more than their own efforts; acceptance and support from family andthe society are essential too. Bearing that in mind, the Bureau will step upits work at the community by listening to opinions from various social sectors,so that a united effort can be made to facilitate the social reintegration ofinmates and juvenile delinquents. In addition, Director Cheng gave a briefpresentation on the latest situation concerning the Bureau’s prisonadministration and social rehabilitation services. Both parties went on to havean in-depth exchange of perspectives regarding topics of common concern incorrections and expressed the wish to strengthen the mutual collaboration onhelping inmates rejoin the society.
President of the Macau Fair and TradeAssociation, Mr. Lam Chong In, gave an overview of the development of theconvention and exhibition industry in Macao and the schemes of nurturingtalents in the industry, and conveyed the hope to work together with the Bureauto extend the scheme to the Prison as well, so that inmates can acquireprofessional skills that are conducive to their return to society.
Subsequently, the visitors met with inmates inthe cell area, learning about their living conditions, sending them Chinese NewYear greetings and the care and support from society, and encouraging them toadopt a positive attitude and lead a responsible life after release. As a thank-you to thevisitors’ care and encouragement, inmates brought them performances includingones of martial arts, street dance and self-composed songs, garnering aconsiderable amount of applause.
The Correctional ServicesBureau, the Aliança de Povo de Instituição de Macau and the Macau Fair andTrade Association hope to further their communication and collaboration tojointly contribute to offender rehabilitation.
