Coloane Prison is a public department responsible for enforcing the penalty of liberty deprivation and custodial measures. Its functions also include adopting measures to correctly enforce penalties and make inmates more disciplined, and coordinating and supervising the monitoring of the people in custody andtheir rehabilitation services.
Coloane Prison has three subsidiary units, namely, the Security and Vigilance Division, the Prison Affairs Support Division and the Social Assistance, Education and Training Division.The Security and Vigilance Division and the Prison Affairs Support Division is responsible for the safety in prison andthe supervision of inmates, including the patrols in and out of the Prison,searches, escorts, maintaining the discipline in cells and managing the day-to-day lives of inmates. The Social Assistance, Education and Training Division is in charge of the assistance and education for inmates which facilitates their return to society.
