Participants of “Visit to Workplace” Program Tour Correctional Services Bureau, Experiencing the Work of Prison Guards (2019-05-21)

To deepen youngsters’ understanding about the work of prison guards, on 21 May, the Correctional Services Bureau and the Education and Youth Affairs Bureau jointly organized 59 students participating in the “Visit to Workplace” activities to visit, in two groups, Coloane Prison of the Correctional Services Bureau. Through touring the cell area facilities, experiencing the tasks in the Prison and exchanging views with the prison guards, the students were able to have a firsthand understanding about correctional services, and the structure and the responsibilities of the prison guards, and hopefully they would consider a career in corrections in the future.

During the activity, the staff members of the Bureau first introduced the functions of the Correctional Services Bureau and the operation of Coloane Prison, before going on to explain the responsibilities of different positions among the prison guards, their career system, the prerequisites for applying for the job, the professional training and the remuneration package. The students were also arranged to tour the facilities in the cell area, while listening to the prison guards’ explanation on the actual conditions relating to their tasks along the way, so that the students would have a more holistic understanding on the matter.

Considering that search operations in the cells are one of their most important tasks, the prison guards specially demonstrated the techniques for the use of the various special equipment for such operations to the students, so that they could apply the equipment and techniques in the “mock search operation in a cell” activity that followed: in groups, they conducted a detailed search in the mock cell for pre-hidden prohibited items, so as to experience the work of the prison guards. Under the guidance of the prison guards, the students divided their tasks and searched for the items at different corners. Thanks to their teamwork, the students completed the mission by successfully uncovering all prohibited items.

Lastly, the Bureau arranged the prison guards to share with the students their unforgettable experience during the induction training as well as the challenges at work and how to cope with them. The students attentively listened and actively raised questions, to which the staff members answered one by one. Some students mentioned how the activity had deepened their overall knowledge of correctional services and how the experiential session had enabled them to understand the professionalism and teamwork involved in the work of the prison guards.

Since 2013, the Correctional Services Bureau and the Education and Youth Affairs Bureau have been collaborating on the “Visit to Workplace” activities under which student participants are arranged to visit the Prison and learn of correctional services and prison guards’ work. The Correctional Services Bureau hopes that the visit and the experiential activity can further enhance the transparency of correctional services and showcase the positive image of the prison guards, so as to encourage more youngsters to join the ranks of prison guards, and together, contribute to the order and stability of the Prison and protect social harmony, lives and property.
